Concept for "Broken Sound of Horse Hooves"
Medium: Cast Bronze
Height: 3.8 meters
Conceptual Description
Through Red Army soldiers lingering between life and death and a warhorse baying toward the sky, this sculpture depicts the sheer brutality of battle and the tragic, life-and-death farewells among comrades. The scene is solemn and filled with pathos. While war brings the joy and cheers of victory, it also demands the grief and wails of sacrifice.
What kind of state, then, does the "broken sound of horse hooves" truly evoke?
It is the steam rising from the ground, born from heads drenched in blood and sweat;
It is the fading silhouettes of the last surviving comrades, dissolving into the wilderness;
It is the clattering of hooves in one's ears, sounding so piercing and maddening amidst the smoke of gunfire;
It is the physical body, carrying what little consciousness remains, accelerating the countdown of life like a boulder hurtling down a valley;
It is a breath, stretched thinner and thinner like a steel needle, piercing into the numb, indifferent air, bringing utter despair and helplessness.
This heartbreak is the cruelty of war, and it is the price of an ideal. Through this work, we express our profound grief and remembrance for the martyrs.
Artistic Philosophy
War is the greatest tragedy in human history, yet it remains one of the most impactful events in human society. Our goal is not merely to commemorate and praise heroism. Instead, we wish to shift the focus from the wins and losses of war to the misfortunes of its individual participants, prompting a deeper contemplation on the very meaning of war.
Therefore, I have chosen an alternative perspective. This approach emphasizes the expression of the humanistic spirit and focuses more heavily on collective democracy and widespread impact. The core of commemoration shifts from the individual to a broader group, highlighting the objective reality of collective behavior.
